HQCC in the News: Call of Duty
Of the nearly 19,000 calls Headquarters received last year, most were fielded by volunteers like Amanda Schwegler.“The best part about Headquarters is being able to hear, at the end of a call, that the person you’ve been talking with sounds better, says they feel better, and seems better able to handle whatever they originally called about,” Schwegler says.

HQCC in the News: Agency Pride
A letter to the editor by our very own Director was published by the Lawrence Journal World yesterday.
Lawrence and Douglas County have many things to be proud of. One of those is Headquarters Counseling Center, one of the oldest 24-hour counseling centers in the country.
In 1969, on Dec. 16, a place called Headquarters opened its doors at 1546 Massachusetts. In the words of founder Brian Bauerle, “Headquarters was always to be flexible and respond to the needs of our clients. We wanted to be adaptable, not institutional.”

Post-Party
Many thanks to everyone who came out for the 40th Anniversary Reception at Watkins Museum Wednesday night, and to all those who made it possible. We’ve got some great pictures from the event, so those of you who weren’t able to attend can get a sense of the fun we had, but that’s another post.
In this post I’d like to share some words of thanks and encouragement and a few special acknowledgement from the reception’s program. Read on after the cut, or download the pdf.

HQCC 40 years
I was with HQ around 1995-1997, while attending KU. For awhile I lived next door to Marcia and even babysat her kids one night.
My GF (now my wife) and I both enrolled in HQ training but did not disclose our relationship because we wanted to be ‘professional’ so we played it cool during training. Eventually we confessed our couplehood and were surprised to learn that no one had caught on to us the whole time!
HQ has a special place in my heart (also my wife’s). In fact, we even put HQ in our wills (please don’t kill us!).
Nowadays we are both Master’s-level social workers (I just finished my MSW in May!) and we have a 2.75 year old son whose bedtime keeps us from attending the celebration.
Please have a toast on our behalf and know that we are thinking about you all.
How To: Share Pictures
Now I know many of you are sitting on wonderful and hilarious photographs from deep in the history of HQCC. How about sharing those with the rest of the class?
